The traveling exhibition “For the Child” about the “Kindertransport,” which rescued around 10,000 mainly Jewish children from the Nazis, can be visited in Wiener Neustadt until July 7, 2026.
Just one suitcase – that was all the approximately 10,000 children who escaped the Nazi regime’s killing machine from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland to Great Britain, were allowed to take with them. The first Kindertransport left Vienna on December 10, 1938 from the Westbahnhof, the last on August 22, 1939, saving around 3,500 Viennese children.
The traveling exhibition “For the Child” by British artists Patricia Ayre and Rosie Potter, curated by Milli Segal, sheds light on the fate of these children. Most of the children who were rescued never saw their parents again. The strictly regulated things in their small suitcases were often the last reminders of their families. The exhibition also highlights Kindertransport children and their families from Wiener Neustadt.
