At the end of August, the Viennese daily newspaper Der Standard reviewed the commemorative publication released in December 2021 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Jewish Welcome Service. Der Standard writer Gregor Auenhammer took his article as an opportunity to also provide information about the responsibilities and significance of the JWS.
Under the title “Active remembrance – in truthfulness to reconciliation”, Auenhammer refers to the importance of active remembrance and quotes Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen from the foreword of the brochure. In his article, Auenhammer also takes one of the 40 life stories from the publication to provide a brief outline of the scope of the JWS’s agendas. “The most significant task in the Jewish Welcome Service’s range of activities,” the reviewer notes, “is the organization and running of a visitor program for victims of the Shoah as well as their descendants.”
A print version of the free 80-page brochure “40 Years Jewish Welcome Service Vienna” in German and English can be obtained directly from the JWS or downloaded here.
