In the middle of October, stones of remembrance were placed at Zirkusgasse 23 in Vienna’s 2nd district – for the librarian Julius Mehrer and his family. At the invitation of the Jewish Welcome Service, descendants of the family from Israel were present at the act of remembrance.
On October 13, deputy mayor Christoph Wiederkehr and district councilor Gerhard Schmid unveiled four memorial stones at the house at Zirkusgasse 23 on behalf of the mayor – in memory of the librarian Julius Mehrer, his wife Stella (later married Russak), his mother-in-law Rosa (actually Rozalia) Bellak and his brother-in-law Otto Bellak and his family.
Only Stella Mehrer survived the Holocaust (in Belgium). She later emigrated to Israel. Her grandchildren Amos Russak, Tali Chamy, and Shlomit Vaknin traveled from there at the invitation of the JWS to attend the act of remembrance. The initiative for the project came from Heimo Gruber and Veronika Freytag from Büchereien Wien (Vienna Libraries); they were supported by the Jewish Welcome Service.
