Welcome to Vienna: Invitation of expelled Jews

In the week from October 7 to 14, a group of 40 people visited Vienna at the invitation of the Jewish Welcome Service. The majority of guests from five nations are descendants, members of the second generation, who went in search of family traces.

Square named after Moshe Jahoda

14. December 2018

At the beginning of November, the square on the corner of Turnergasse / Dingelstedtgasse in Vienna’s 15th district was named after Moshe Jahoda at a celebratory event. Present at the occasion were numerous guests of honor of the city of Vienna, the district, the Jewish Community, from Jahoda’s family from Israel as well as companions, colleagues, residents and friends. At the same time, the events of the November Pogrom in 1938 were remembered.

November Pogrom remembrance with Federal President Van der Bellen

14. December 2018

On the evening of November 8, a service of remembrance of the November Pogrom was held on Vienna’s Tempelgasse, where Austria’s largest synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938. In front of 600 guests, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen recalled the events in a powerful speech.

Visit to Vienna by Rabbi David Lapp

Rabbi David Lapp, who was able to flee the NS regime for the US with his parents in 1940, was in Vienna with his wife, Ruth, at the invitation of the Jewish Welcome Service, for the memorial service of the November Pogroms.

Descendants of the second generation visit Vienna

Reception given by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and his wife, Doris Schmidauer

In the last week of April, the Jewish Welcome Service (JWS) hosted around 40 Jews with Austrian roots in Vienna. An extensive program was arranged for the visitors from the USA, Israel and the UK, most of whom were descendants of the second generation.
