In mid-October, 20 Jews – mostly members of the “Second Generation” – visited Vienna at the invitation of the Jewish Welcome Service. Due to the Hamas terror attack on Israel on October 7, guests from Israel were unable to travel, and increased security measures were in place for guests from the US, Australia, and England.

Cross-generational mediation work: Leon Zelman Prize goes to Hannah Landsmann

14. December 2023

In mid-September, this year’s Leon Zelman Prize for Dialogue and Understanding was presented to Hannah Landsmann at Vienna City Hall. During the award ceremony, tribute was also paid to Heidemarie Uhl, who was one of Austria’s most important historians and also formed part of the Zelman prize jury.

85 years of the Kindertransport: Hella Pick in Vienna

14. December 2023

December 10 marked the 85th anniversary of the departure of the first “Kindertransport” from Wien Westbahnhof train station. To commemorate the occasion, renowned publicist Hella Pick visited Vienna to tell her story and receive the Golden Medal of Honour of the City of Vienna. Several other events in Vienna have also commemorated, and continue to commemorate, the Kindertransport.

From Grünfeld to Grenville – Anthony Grenville remembers

In mid-October, an evening of remembrance was held in the Literaturhaus Wien. Under the heading of “From Grünfeld to Grenville”, the history of the Viennese Grünfeld family was recalled – in the presence of family member and exile researcher Anthony Grenville.

In December 2021, a commemorative publication was produced to mark the 40th anniversary of the Jewish Welcome Service. The lavishly illustrated 80-page publication in German and English has now been reissued in an updated edition.
